About the series
I lived in Johannesburg, South Africa for over a year in a new suburb called Sunninghill in the North. To the people in Jo'burg, it's known as the new North; a place where the white minorities began to flee in the seventies. It's a man-made utopia, spotless, beautiful and lush yet eerily vacant. Nobody walks in the North, they drive with their car windows closed and doors locked. The majority of the minorities live idyllically behind protected barriers, walls, fences and gates. They seem veiled and protected from South Africa's dark past, a past that still haunts the country today. The series looks at the people that live outside these barriers in a country that is defined and confined by its borders.
